Working Out for a Cause: An Alternative Approach to Energy Production
I have always been interested in Sustainability, and as a CEP student, my focus has been researching what motivates people to action on environmental issues. I began thinking about power production and everyday activity, and found that almost every person in the United States works out a least once a week. That is a huge amount of human-power going unharnessed. With the help of the UW Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF), the Intramural Activities Center (IMA), and SportsArt America, a local retailer of human powered gym equipment, I began the process of installing human powered gym equipment into the IMA Gym on our campus. Working in direct contact with these three entities, I rallied administrative support, worked through funding agreements, and wrote a full report for the CSF so that they can fund and install this project next year. This experience has shown me that when you dream big, anything can happen. I look forward to seeing the installation up and running at the IMA Gym by early September of 2014.
